There I was, enjoying my life as a CEO, running a successful company, and thinking I had things moving in the right direction. Things were good, right? I was happy, satisfied, and making money. What more could I ask for? Little did I know, life had other plans for me, and it took a catastrophic event to bring those plans into focus.
Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, and suddenly, my CEO role turned into a whirlwind of chaos and responsibility. With my office right across from the Superdome, I found myself thrust into the role of disaster manager for my team, our customers, and even our families. With communications down, homes and businesses destroyed and areas completely flooded, we had to figure out if our team members were okay, did they still have a home, were they alive and well? It was a wake-up call like no other.
In the midst of all the turmoil, I had an epiphany. While I'd been working hard for profits and success, what truly mattered to me was the people – their safety, their well-being, their lives. It was then that I realized my purpose wasn't about profitability; it was about making a positive impact on others, no matter the circumstances.
Fast forward nearly two decades and that realization still fuels me every single day. I've come to understand that profitability isn't the end goal. It’s merely a means to an end, a tool to help me make even greater impacts on the world around me.
I understand that not everyone has had a life-altering experience like mine. But imagine waking up each morning with a sense of purpose, ready to tackle whatever life throws your way. That's the magic of aligning your work with your deepest values and goals.
So, how do you uncover your purpose? It's a journey – one that requires some serious soul-searching. Start by reflecting on what brings you joy, what you stand for, where your talents lie, and the legacy you want to leave behind.
Once you've got a handle on your purpose, it's time to make some moves. Map out your career goals, hunt for purpose-driven opportunities, and infuse your work with meaning and passion. Start your own company! And, don't forget to stay flexible. Your purpose may evolve over time and that's perfectly okay.
At the end of the day, aligning your work with your purpose isn't just about finding a job. It's about creating a life that's fulfilling, meaningful, and true to who you are. Today, my mission leads me to my choices. I get to work with growing entrepreneurial businesses, lead yoga classes in my community and facilitate experiences like The Dig. To me, these are all passion projects helping me impact the lives of others in small ways, but in ways that matter. So, embrace the journey and get ready for a life filled with purpose, joy, and endless possibilities.
